A Recent Session & the Discernment of Psychic Sources
I want to share some details from a recent session. Despite being a medium, I tend to be more scientist/skeptic rather than all-out believer. Luckily, research into mediumship seems to support my strange love/hate relationship with the psychic realm. And even luckier is the way in which Spirit seems to patiently support my growth and understanding. Let me explain!
We know for certain that psychic ability exists. While some skeptics are at the far end of the spectrum and vehemently deny any potential, research strongly supports the existence of Psi (psychic ability) or “Anomalous Information Reception” (AIR). What this research also indicates is that while Psi clearly exists in certain individuals, the ability is not conclusive proof in the survival of consciousness after death. Information may be coming from a “psychic reservoir” aka the “Akashic field” or via “Super-Psi.” Super-Psi is the ability to pull information from living people as well as from past, present, and future events. The two later forms have nothing to do with the survival of consciousness and are often referred to as “Somatic Psi,” while the former connection to consciousness is referred to as “Survival Psi.”
So how can we discern the actual source(s) of our psychic information?
This realization plagued me some years ago and actually caused me to step away from doing mediumship. I discovered that being psychic does not mean someone is always “telling me” the information. I look back now and realize how silly I was to believe all information came directly from spirit (and I also realize how some people may not like these comments, but they are my experiences. You don’t have to agree with me, but at present, science does support my views).
Like a child who thought I “knew” how things worked, in time I realized just how naïve I’d been. So, while I spurned the mediumship, I still could not deny the existence of psychic awareness. Once I started to slowly step back into my abilities, I asked to be given the opportunity to start discerning the various sources of my reception. A recent session served as another reminder for these varied sources of information and the necessity for careful discernment.
In the course of this mediumship session, I connected with a departed loved one. As always, evidence was provided and the sitter offered proper validation. But, as the energy of the departed person faded away, the energy of another person came to take its place. I began to provide evidence, and the two sitters who were present became keenly aware of who I was describing. The problem was that this person was still alive!
So what did I learn from this experience?
In the case of the loved one who was passed-on, the information was more than simple facts, evidence, and a description of their personality. Yes, these details are very important because they establish identity and create credibility, but what is it that makes living consciousness so different from static information? Do you know?
Think of it this way. What’s the difference between reading about someone in a book versus talking to them in person? In a book, someone can share their thoughts and feelings and tell us all about their life experiences (psychic reservoir) but this does not mean they are still alive and speaking to us. So what indicators do lead us towards the evidence of survival and living communication?
Information which comes from actual consciousness – the departed loved one – has free will. It is alive, living, and sharing how it feels, not just when they were alive, but in the present moment – the now!
During the course of the session, the departed loved one expressed happiness and joy about things happening in the sitter’s life – right now. The spirit indicated regrets which did not exist until after his passing – regrets about a life not lived as it could have been. And of course, there is always the love! Deep emotion which can often affect the psychic is another strong clue that the information is coming in “real time” rather than through the psychic reservoir or super psi theories.
In shifting my session information to the living person, the description of this man’s personality/energy was also accurate. There were details and facts which allowed for identification and even emotions which expressed the person’s current state of being. But, there was no message, no regrets, and no intelligence or free will behind the information. It was static, not alive!
For some psychics this difference can be felt. Granted, this feeling can’t be conveyed to the sitter because it’s a personal internal experience. All we can do is explain to the sitter that the two connections differ from one another and therefore allows the psychic to understand that one is from a living being who is communicating with them (mediumship), while another is about a living being who is not communicating with them, but about whom they are aware (Psi).
Now, was there a message “about” the living person I was describing during the session? Yes there was, and the message was that this person was in a dark space and needed some help. After the session was over, the sitter contacted this living person and was able to validate that he was in fact going through a difficult time.
So, who or what directed my attention to talk about this living person – someone the sitter hadn’t thought about or communicated with in quite some time? This notion brings up numerous questions. Did the deceased loved one bring it to my attention? If so, then why? The deceased did not know the living person while he was alive, so why get involved? Was there some other living consciousness present which prompted me to begin speaking about this forgotten friend – a guide perhaps? Who decided that this living person needed help and was in a bad space? And why bring it to the sitter’s attention?
Unfortunately, many of these questions remain unanswered, but they also inspire me to deeper exploration. What I do know, however, is that no one was “telling” me about this person, only directing my attention to his energy, then allowing me to connect with it utilizing my own “super-psi” ability.
This lesson was just another vital one in helping my overly skeptical mind to truly understand the subtle difference in discerning the sources of psychic information. Just because I can spout facts about a departed loved one does not mean actual living communication is taking place. Maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t!
As I close, this blog is not meant to sway or cause doubt in those who do psychic work. It is, however, designed to offer insight and caution. Doing mediumship and psychic work requires that we have a level of discernment which allows us to provide understanding and awareness to those who trust our judgment – our sitters. We owe it to the sitters to understand where our information is coming from, but we also owe it to ourselves and the psychic community as whole. Above all, we owe it to those who have lost their voice and yet are still alive – our departed loved ones!
